Proudly Canadian – No Name

“No Name” is a Canadian food brand under Loblaw umbrella. It is well known in Canada, and it is one of those things which can be found only in Canadian stores (No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer, Super-Valu, Maxi, Atlantic Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart and others). Proudly Canadian “No Name” became an internet meme because of its simplistic design and affordable low price.

Those are products that get straight to the point as BuzzFeed called them. For example there is a No Name wine, which doesn’t even says “wine” on its bottle, just “White Blank”. They have an “apple beverage”, which doesn’t try to pretend it is a high quality juice. They are not trying to increase brand value by writing lies on a package as other companies do, their only selling point is the price.

All Canadian products required by law to write everything in two official Canadian languages (English and French), but because of No Name’s minimalist design, it is also a thing. You can learn basic french in Canadian provinces with less than 5% of French speaking population by walking around stores and checking big No Name labels.

The brand was launched on March 21, 1978 by Loblaw company with 16 generic products. This company has a very strong positions on Canadian retail market and they cover all groups of buyers, from rich and middle class to less financially fortunate individuals. To compete with Walmart’s cheap goods Lablaw developed a strategy which concentrates only on low prices. They don’t invest in branding and packaging much, it is all the same for all products with yellow label.

Their website has a fun design too.

Of course No Name’s products have not the best quality, but food is food. Many people who want to save on their groceries need simple things like bread, milk and other stuff, there are many people who don’t want to overpay for fancy products and No Name fits their needs. Whet it comes to products which are very hard to fake, for example beans or peanuts, even middle class sometimes choose this brand.

The font they use called “Helvetica”, it was created by a Swiss designer (Helvetia is an old Latin name of Switzerland when it was a Roman province). This is not very popular font, but No Name uses it anyway.

also they never use capital letters…

Now they have more than 2900 different products and famous not only in Canada, but in the U.S. and other countries.

Quebec’s Flag Day

In January 21, 1948 a new flag of Quebec was officially adopted in Canada by Maurice Duplessis, 16th Premier of the Canadian province of Quebec. Today its floating over the main tower and many other government buildings representing French Canadian heritage.

The official name of the flag is “Fleurdelisé”. Cross on flags is very common in Europe (England, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Malta, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Sweden and many other examples), this is the main symbol of Christianity. “fleurs-de-lis“, a small white French symbol on blue background means purity and royalty, and the blue background represents heaven.

It was an earlier version that showed gilt fleurs de lis all pointing inward to the intersection of the arms of the cross. The final version, with white fleurs de lis pointing upward, apparently had not yet been available.

You can watch a video by J.J. McCullough with a short yet informative history of Canadian flags, including the flag of Quebec (4:40):

Proudly Canadian – Canada Goose

Canada Goose company is known not only in Canada, but in many countries around the globe. It is not an easy task to make and sell clothing produced in America because of strong foreign competition, but Canada Goose company does it successfully for many years.

According to data now Canada Goose’s revenue is growing rapidly, wholesale revenue grew from 288 mil. CAD in 2017 to 336 in 2018 and direct sales increased from 115 million Canadian dollars to 225.

Why people are lining up to buy those fancy jackets, parkas and other products? We’ll try to answer this question.

Company’s history started in 1950s, when an entrepreneur Sam Tick immigrates to Canada. He created Metro Sportswear Ltd. in Toronto, which specializes in woolen vests, raincoats and snowmobile suits. After 20 years his son establishes the label Snow Goose, which later becomes Canada Goose. They wanted to make jackets for coldest places on earth. After that Reiss family continue company’s development.

Over the last 21 years, Canada Goose has grown from one small factory in Toronto to seven facilities across Canada with products shipped to 38 countries around the world.

In 2018 they opened 7th factory in Winnipeg which created more that 700 new jobs, for over 55 years all production facilities were located in Canada.

Huge European and American brands moved their production to China and other countries long time ago, but Canada Goose proudly makes everything in Canada. It is not an easy decision, minimum wage in Ontario is $14/hour, for such high labor demanding production those are major expenses. Of course if would be much cheaper to open factories elsewhere, this would reduce prime cost and make products more competitive, but the company believes that “Made In Canada” on mark on any product wins against the opportunity of cost reduction.

Canada Goose is not cheap, their parkas cost $900 and more, but this doesn’t scare customers. Canadian winter is long and tough, in some places temperature drops to -30 and below, you need to be sure you well protected against such hard conditions. The thing about winter jackets is that people usually wear one for a long time, 3-5 years is a minimum, often people wear one jacket for 10 and more years, so when you choosing one, you might as well spend good money on it, winter jacket is an expensive product.

Sure you can get a nice looking jacket for $100 or even cheaper during the sale, this jacket might be quite warm and of a decent quality, but here we come to another reason why people would pay 10 times that for Canada Goose brand. Brand is the answer.

In a grocery store you see a lineup to Canadians apples and vegetables, close to it you can see much cheaper apples from The U.S. or Mexico, but people still go for “Made In Canada”. Canadian products are popular not only among Canadians, but among new immigrants as well.

When it comes to food this behavior can be explained easily, if something grows close, probably it is fresh and “natural”, so what’s up with the jacket? Germans make cars, Russians make vodka, French and Italians make wine, Ukraine makes grain and Americans make iPhones in China 🙂

Canada has a problem when it comes to international fame and stereotypes. Canada is just not very well knows in the world. Many people in different countries know nothing about Canada and they don’t read much about Canada in news. I know that because in MapleDude.Ca i am having hard time to find new content about Canada and its culture. With that in mind people know one thing about Canada for sure – it is cold out there! So Canadians must have a good winter clothing, there you go.

When people hear about winter jackets made in Canada they want to buy one, because Canadians must know what they are doing.

Another thing about Canada Goose is that those jackets are just cool to some people only because they are expensive. They are expensive in Canada, you can guess how much they cost in Europe and Asia with additional delivery costs (although Asians with their weather don’t really need warm parkas).

Why Canada Goose Jackets are so expensive? Reducing its price might have a negative effect on sales because demand for fancy and luxury goods is inelastic.

You can see that those jackets are very popular in Korean, Chinese and Arabic Canadian communities, you see a lot of people wearing them. Sometimes it is even funny because you know that some of those people are not very rich, yet they willing to spend a lot of money on it. Partly this is because of the feeling of belonging, they are in Canada now, they want to be Canadians and buying Canadian is a good way to show it.

Surly if company decided to move production to an Asian country those new Canadian immigrants wouldn’t be that interested in buying.

One more thing which makes Canada Goose popular is its quality.

Canada Goose products are good, it is hard to say if it worth the price, but by watching one of many videos from their production facility you can see how Canadians making those jackets and be sure that quality is high.

Canada Goose is not alone, there are other Canadian products, companies and brands, for example: A&W, Tim Hortons, Second Cup, Minute Maid juices, Cascade, Liberté yogurt. Competition is tough because no country in G7 trades like Canada, but Canadians managed to save some production and industries at home, some of which are not only surviving, they are growing. Canada Goose is a great example of such company with proud “Made in Canada” mark.

Chinese People In Canada

The total number of Chinese Canadians in 2016

Have you ever wondered how many people with Chinese background
(From China Mainland, Taiwan or Hong-Kong) live in Canada right now? Is it 2 million, 1 million or maybe 10?

According to Canadian census 2016 there were 1,769,195 people with Chinese ethnic origin, which is 5.1% of total Canadian population.

How many Chinese people come to Canada every year?

To answer that let’s take a look at the express entry report for 2017. Express Entry is a Canadian immigration program with open statistics. According to this data there were 7,466 invitation issues for people from China to come and settle in Canada in 2017, it is 9% of total number of invitations. In 2016 it was 2,741 people (8%), but in 2016 the total number of immigrants was much lower from all countries.

It worth to mention that The Express Entry is not the only program Canada has which allows to immigrate, so these are not total numbers of people who are coming, a big portion is family reunion and sponsorship.

The total number of citizens from the People’s Republic of China landed in Canada in recent years had a minimum of 19,512 in 2015 and the maximum of 34,116 in 2013.

Source: Government of Canada.

In what provinces Chinese Canadians usually live?

Geographically and historically British Columbia was the place to immigrate from Asia, not only from China, but from Japan and Korea too. Today the majority of Chinese Canadians settle in Ontario.

According to 2006 Census there were 713,245 Chinese in Ontario and 464,800 in BC in 2006.

Changes in immigration from China to Canada and history

Chinese immigration to Canada started in a long time ago, in 1891 only 0.2% of Canadians had Chinese background and after that for almost 100 years (until 1981) this number didn’t grow much. After 1981 Chinese immigration started to growth, but in recent years it remains quite stable. Note that Statistics Canada considers Taiwanese Canadians as a separate group in all researches.

You can find a brief chronology of Chinese Canadian history here:

The number of immigrants from China grew 63.9% from 332,825 in 2001 to 545,535 in 2011, making Chinese the second largest foreign-born group in Canada.

How rich are Chinese Canadians?

Another interesting question to cover in this article is how rich are Chinese Canadians? reported that Canada now #2 immigration destination for rich Chinese after The U.S. Of course not all people coming from China to Canada are very rich, but this report states that Vancouver became #5 city where wealthy people from China want to but property or immigrate (Toronto took 8th place).

It is quite expensive to immigrate in general for a person from any country, cost of living in Canada is quite high compared to many countries, this means that many immigrants in Canada are not poor, not only Chinese. You have to have enough money to live in Canada for a year, this amount is somewhere around 15k, not to mention that cost of education for international students are much higher, compared to Canadians and people with PR (Permanent Residents status).

Most of the people who come to Canada are not poor, it is just China has more people in general, so you see more rich Chinese people as a result.

Why people from China choose Canada?

People from many countries choose Canada as their immigration destination, China is not alone here. According to Canada was #8 immigration destination in 2017.

Canada takes 25th place in the world by cost of living ranking ( data), yet Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea actually have higher cost of living, but they are much more populated than Canada. Canada provides good education, its ecological situation is one of the best, medicine is very good as well, so no wonder why people choose Canada. Compared to the U.S. Canada has transparent immigration process and multicultural society which allows people to integrate smoothly.

People on websites like Quora giving many reasons which explain historical Chinese immigration to Canada, for example:

  • Government of Canada requests it. Canada is the country that has 2nd largest land area in the world. Yet, it only has the population of 35 million. Canada needs more people;
  • In the early 1860s, there is a gold rush in San Francisco of US and a lot of Chinese from Guangdong China went for it. Yet in 1882, San Francisco launched an act that expels the China’s immigrants since the population was growing larger and larger. Then it’s said to be found out that there were new gold mine appeared in Australia and Canada. Then China’s immigrants immigrate to Canada;
  • In the late 1990s, some Hong Kong people feared of the handover of Hong Kong from UK to China, so they immigrated to Canada. By the mean time, some Cantonese from Guangdong also immigrated to Canada since the economy of Guangdong is growing better;
  • Captives. Not all the immigrants goes to Canada for their own wish, some are actually passive. During the 1850s, US was trying to build the pacific rail connecting the east and the west of the country, but the locals did not want to do that kind of hard job. So the businessman and the government get the contract workers from Guangdong;

Is immigration from China good or bad for Canada?

For Canadian economy Chinese immigration is not only good, it is great. points out that:

Most Chinese immigrants are middle-class or wealthy, able to afford big Metro Vancouver houses and be treated as “VIPs” by jewellers and automobile sales staff.

They spend a lot of money in Canada, they bring investments and create jobs. Foreign direct investments (FDI) by China were 1.9% of total investments (8-th place), but many investments by Chinese are not considered to be foreign because they became Canadians quite fast and then spend their saving as Canadians.

It is well known that property market has a huge influence from Chinese money, some people find it troubling due to raising prices, some people even call it a bubble, but after all the fact that many people from China want to own a property in Canada is definitely a good thing. Prices are rising only because private companies can’t build new houses and apartments fast enough to satisfy the demand.

Canadian gambling industry is heavily influenced by Chinese as well as many other industries.

If Canada failed to attract Chinese immigrants and investors those money would just go somewhere else, probably to The U.S. or Australia.

Actually there are already signs that point out a decline of rich Chinese immigrants, published an interesting article in 2017 with the following facts:

The top three inflows of wealthy immigrants were the same as last year – Australia, the US, and Canada. Australia saw 10,000 wealthy families immigrate, making it the top single destination. In second was the US, with 9,000 new wealthy families. In third was Canada, with 5,000 wealthy new immigrants. Looking at the chart below, we can see that these are substantial declines compared to the previous year, especially in Canada.

Immigration in general is a huge positive factor for economic growth, especially if those immigrants are educated and rich.

The number of Chinese restaurants and stores in Canada is growing, this creates jobs and growth for Canadians economy. Those restaurants are popular not only among Chinese people, but among all other ethnic groups.

Wikipedia has a list of notable Chinese Canadians which proves that people from China contribute a lot to the Canadian society not only by bringing money, but in many other ways.

Will there be more people from China coming to Canada in future?

It is hard to say. In 2017 one of employees blogged that Canada should get ready for more people coming from China, but statistics is not that certain. In the last 10 years number of Chinese immigrants in Canada was quite stable. People from China will keep coming, but today people from India come in a much bigger numbers.

If Chinese economy continue its growth and borders will be open, we can expect stable Chinese immigration in future. We may see more elderly people coming from China in future due to “One Child Policy”, but Canada will remain a very pleasant destination for rich and middle-class Chinese.

There going to be more Chinese Canadians, but 2nd and 3rd generation people, those who were born and raised in Canada, very often rightly consider themselves Canadians. Some of them don’t even speak Mandarin or Cantonese. Chinese and all other Asians integrating in western society quite well. Not as good as Europeans (due to language and culture differences), but much better than people from other parts of the world.

That is it for today. This was an original research by MapleDude.Ca website with custom drawings. Later we may cover Korean, Japanese and other ethnic groups of immigrants as well.

Totem Poles In Canada

Totem Poles are spiritual structures of first nations and indigenous peoples of the north. They can be found in Canada, United States (Alaska) and rarely in some other places like Russian northern and siberian territories, northern Europe (Scandinavia, Germany, etc.) and in Africa.

A Totem is a sacred object for a group of people, family or a tribe. It is often portrays animals, nature, evil or good spirits.

Totemism, being part of animistic religions, was common in many places, but in Canada it is particularity well represented. Canadians have a certain respect towards the native people and their beliefs, they are seeing totems as important historical heritage objects.

Totem poles can be found in many Canadian provinces, but the most famous is the British Columbia, many Canadian parks and public places there still have original totem poles.

It is important to say that many modern totems, including an original image featured in this article – are not proper representation of the totems.

Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) – is a well known building in Canadian city of Toronto, Ontario. This museum of art, world culture and natural history is the biggest in Canada and one of the biggest in all North-America. It’s located in down-town Toronto (Bloor Street West) close to University of Toronto.

There you can discover a collection of 6,000,000+ items in 40 galleries from all around the world. Probably the most fascinating things to see there are big expositions of dinosaurs and meteorites.

Today it is not only a place of the past, but it’s a very modern building with “alien architecture”. Modern design was introduced in 2007 with a support from a Jamaican-Canadian business magnate Michael Lee-Chin. Now this building is called “The Crystal”, it’s designed by famous architect Daniel Libeskind.

Remembrance Day In Canada

November 11 is a memorial day in Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and other countries of Commonwealth of Nations (former territories of the British Empire). This day is called Remembrance Day or Poppy Day (“Armistice Day” before that).

On that day these countries recall members of armed forces who have died in the line of duty during first World War and other conflicts.

A red flower people wear on that day is called “Red Remembrance Poppy”. This day is known in many countries as Veterans day (Independence Day in Poland, Remembrance of the Dead in Netherlands etc.) and it’s often a public holiday.
