Proudly Canadian – Harvey’s

Canadian cuisine has many streams with First Nations, English, Scottish and French roots, but one kind is close to The United States and their modern burgers. Harvey’s is a Canadian fast food restaurant chain famous for its great meat.

It is very hard to compete with huge multinational corporations such as McDonald’s and Burger King, but Harvey’s does it well. They rely on local branding and high quality products.

Just like Canada Goose this company is also 100% Canadian, for over 50 years their restaurants are own by Canadians and serving in all Canadian provinces.

At Harvey’s you’d get a great 600 Fahrenheit degrees grilled meat and you can choose its fresh topping like in Subway.

Company invested a lot in furniture in their restaurants so it feels like a Canadian place, something between a fancy pub and a sport bar, but without crazy drunks.

Harvey’s experience is nice for people who are looking for a bit more in a burger’s place, for a reasonable price you’d get a nice restaurant experience with private seats. Prices are ok, you can get a combo for $10, it is a bit higher than in other places, but when you try their burgers (original recipe from 1959) a big chance that you’d realize it’s totally worth it.

For those who watched American TV series “Suits” (which was shot in Toronto) and remember a cool guy named Harvey there, it feels like if Harvey was a Canadian, he’d definitely eat at Harvey’s.

MapleDude.Ca recommends you to try their food at least ones when you visit Canada, and for those who are Canadians, but never went there – you are missing out. Check out this Harvey’s review from KBDProductionsTV:

Canadian Caveman Bill from Yukon

These days downshifting (moving to a place with lower cost of living) as popular as ever, but caveshifting movement, a term, which i just made up, is not that popular, although crazy success of Primitive Technology Guy shows that people are always interested in it.

When Australian Primitive Technology Guy doesn’t actually live like that (he moves to a wild life only when he make videos), the Canadian Caveman Bill is no joke, he does live in an actual cave for the past 20+ years.

Bill lives near Dawson City, a very small Canadian place located in Yukon. He tells his story:

When I first got to Dawson City, I was looking at a bunch of different options,” said Bill. “Tent City was going at the time. Around 300 to 500 transient workers set up a camp down by the ferry land. But it was a bit too much a zoo for me. My friend Kevin suggested that there were some caves across here. So I came over, checked them out. And once the river broke, I threw in my canoe and paddled over and moved on in.

Canadian Caveman Bill

Bill is a simple guy who doesn’t promote his “cave dwelling lifestyle” and he doesn’t reject modern society, he just lives in a cave and enjoys peaceful nature. He has almost everything he needs for such life, he makes furniture from wood and he is well known in the town. Bill visit his friends in the town often, sometimes he buys stuff there which he can’t get in nature or make himself. His furnished cave brings more tourists to the city.

Also, he is well educated, Bill Donaldson graduated from Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto (Info from his Facebook page).

What Are The Best Canadian Cities To Live In?

In 2018 moneysense.ca published a ranking of best Canadians cities to live in. This rating might be valuable for people who want to move to another city or for new immigrants. Often we just live where we live for a long time without much thinking only because we were born there or because those are the most popular places for immigrants (such as Toronto). At some point of life many people make a decision to move out so they can find a better job, cheaper property and nicer environment.

Let’s take a look at the ranking MoneySence.Ca did, here are top 10 places in different Canadian provinces:

  1. Oakville, ON;
  2. Ottawa, ON;
  3. Russell, ON;
  4. Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, QC;
  5. Lacombe, AB;
  6. Milton, ON;
  7. Canmore, AB;
  8. Westmount, QC;
  9. Saint-Lambert, QC;
  10. Halton Hills, ON;

Funny thing, eh? You’d expect to see here Toronto, Quebec, Montreal or maybe Vancouver, but they are far down. Toronto on 16-th place, Quebec is on 121, Montreal takes 241th place and a very popular place for Chinese immigrants, Vancouver, takes 88th place.

Oakville takes top because of its amenities, low crime and wealth.
In terms of healthcare and transportation Ottawa is very good. Russell city in Ontario might be the choice for people who want to buy a property. Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, QC is the same as Oakville, but its stats are a bit lower. Canmore city in Alberta province made it to the top because of its low taxes. Good to know. Westmount, QC is very good for artists, it is also famous for its pleasant community.

If we check the worst cities to live in from this list, most of them located in Nova Scotia, many in Quebec.

Totem Poles In Canada

Totem Poles are spiritual structures of first nations and indigenous peoples of the north. They can be found in Canada, United States (Alaska) and rarely in some other places like Russian northern and siberian territories, northern Europe (Scandinavia, Germany, etc.) and in Africa.

A Totem is a sacred object for a group of people, family or a tribe. It is often portrays animals, nature, evil or good spirits.

Totemism, being part of animistic religions, was common in many places, but in Canada it is particularity well represented. Canadians have a certain respect towards the native people and their beliefs, they are seeing totems as important historical heritage objects.

Totem poles can be found in many Canadian provinces, but the most famous is the British Columbia, many Canadian parks and public places there still have original totem poles.

It is important to say that many modern totems, including an original image featured in this article – are not proper representation of the totems.

Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) – is a well known building in Canadian city of Toronto, Ontario. This museum of art, world culture and natural history is the biggest in Canada and one of the biggest in all North-America. It’s located in down-town Toronto (Bloor Street West) close to University of Toronto.

There you can discover a collection of 6,000,000+ items in 40 galleries from all around the world. Probably the most fascinating things to see there are big expositions of dinosaurs and meteorites.

Today it is not only a place of the past, but it’s a very modern building with “alien architecture”. Modern design was introduced in 2007 with a support from a Jamaican-Canadian business magnate Michael Lee-Chin. Now this building is called “The Crystal”, it’s designed by famous architect Daniel Libeskind.
